Myrna and Tom McDonald were recognized as Honorary Rotarians at the July 29 meeting of the Rotary Club of Los Alamos

The Los Alamos Rotary Club Board recognized Myrna and Tom McDonald as Honorary Members during its July 29 meeting at the Manhattan Project Restaurant.
Rotary International (RI) defines an Honorary Member as a person who, by serving with distinction in the furtherance of Rotary ideals, has been elected to honorary membership of a club. An honorary member is exempt from payment of fees and dues, has no vote and may not hold office. However, an honorary member may attend all meetings and enjoy privileges of the club. Honorary membership is valid for a lifetime.
RI also defines eligibility for Honorary Membership as persons who have distinguished themselves by meritorious service in the furtherance of Rotary ideals and those persons considered friends of Rotary for their permanent support of Rotary’s cause. Persons may hold honorary membership in more than one club.
There are many distinguished heads of state, explorers, authors, musicians, astronauts and other public personalities who have been named honorary members of Rotary clubs around the world. They include King Gustaf of Sweden, King George VI of England, Sir Winston Churchill, humanitarian Albert Schweitzer, Charles Lindbergh, composer Jean Sibelius, explorers Sir Edmund Hillary and Thor Heyerdahl, Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, Bob Hope, Dr. Albert Sabin, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and many past presidents of the United States.
The McDonalds have been involved in Rotary for years. Tom joined the local Rotary Club in 1991 and has served as publications/newsletter editor, secretary, vice-president and in 1998 as president. Jointly, Tom and Myrna have received five Paul Harris Awards.
Myrna joined the club in 1994 and served as secretary, vice president and president in 2004. She also was on the District 5520 planning committee for the district meeting held in Taos in 2005, and was Fellowship Chair at the district level. She worked with Deborah Simon on the Guatemala project and went to Uspantan, Guatemala. When Myrna returned from Guatemala, she assisted Simon by traveling to Rotary clubs throughout the District to educate the clubs about the need for matching grants for the Guatemala water, education and health projects. Myrna also served as secretary for United by Friendship.
The McDonalds attended the 2004 Rotary International meeting in Japan and the 2000 Rotary International meeting in San Antonio, Texas. Their travels have taken them to many places where they attended Rotary meetings when possible. They have attended Rotary meetings in Paris, France; Dusseldorf, Germany; Austin, Texas; Fairfax, Va.; and Santa Fe.
Tom recently has served on the committee to select a vocational scholarship recipient, and Myrna now serves on the Rotary Foundation committee. Both Tom and Myrna have been and continue to be active in Rotary activities.
The Los Alamos Rotary Club has four other Honorary Members, Chuck Tallman, Kerry Burns, Bob Hull and Dee Wilson. The late Don Keigher also was an Honorary Member.
