Tuesday, Kathrine Wells gave a presentation to the Rotary Club of Los Alamos on the Mesa Prieta petroglyph project. Wells, who is the author of Life on the Rocks, said, “I have a big secret. It is 12 miles long, 36 square miles … we call it Mesa Prieta.” She explained the site, which is located near Velarde, is the biggest petroglyph site in New Mexico. It is estimated to contain more than 60,000 rock images. The mission of the project, Wells said, is to record all the petroglyphs, educate the public about these images and preserve the site.
