The success of the Rotary Club of Los Alamos’ Crab Fest was a cause for celebration during the regular club meeting Tuesday at the Manhattan Project restaurant. And what better way to celebrate than to donate some money to another local organization?
Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) received a $9,100 donation from Rotary. The funds were raised during Saturday’s annual Crab Fest fundraiser at the Knights of Columbus Hall. The donation will go toward purchasing picnic tables at the new Los Alamos County Nature Center, which PEEC will operate.
After receiving the check, PEEC Executive Director Kathrine Watson said, “This is a huge gift to us and we’re thrilled to have it.”
She explained PEEC plans to develop a picnic area at the Nature Center, complete with a fence, picnic tables and a few “fun, whimsical touches.”
Rotary’s donation came just in time, Watson said. A teacher recently called to ask about scheduling a field trip to the new Nature Center and inquired if there would be a place where students could eat. Thanks to Rotary, Watson said, her answer was yes.
The new nature center will be unveiled to the community on Earth Day, April 22.
